Hydroponic & Aquaponic Farm

Where Young Scientists Become Environmental Stewards

In partnership with New York Sun Works, BWL created a cutting-edge hydroponic and aquaponic farm inside our Lower School Science Lab. This unique facility gives students in Kindergarten through 5th grade hands-on opportunities to explore plant growth, biodiversity, and sustainable farming practices.

Inside these living laboratories, children learn how plants thrive in soil-free, nutrient-rich systems and how aquaponics creates a balanced ecosystem between fish and plants. Caring for the farm builds responsibility, problem-solving skills, and a deeper appreciation for environmental stewardship and global food systems.

What students grow extends well beyond the lab. Vegetables and plants harvested by our Lower and Middle School “bioengineers” are used in cross-disciplinary projects—from operating a student-run farm stand to promoting healthy eating habits and bringing science concepts to life in tangible, memorable ways.

More than a lab project, the farm reflects BWL’s commitment to experiential learning and sustainability, inspiring students to think critically, act responsibly, and imagine innovative solutions for the future.
