A Cappella Assembly Brings Divisions Together

By Danielle Lambert

Lower School students were treated to a special performance by BWL's a cappella groups the Beaux Ties and the MsChords.

During their weekly assembly the students watched a virtual performance of "If I Were A Boy" (Beyonce) performed by the BWL MsChords and "In The Still Of The Night" (Fred Parris and The Satins) performed by the BWL Beaux Ties.

Following the performance, the younger students had the opportunity to pose questions to the older students. The seniors were asked about their favorite part of being in an a cappella group. "My favorite part about singing in an a cappella group is the ability to make music with kids in other grades. You're making a bond with people who you normally wouldn't talk to during the regular school day, so it's a very special opportunity." said Zachary Asnis '21.

Senior Valerie Gottridge '21 echoed that sentiment. "I think my favorite thing is being able to work in a group and learn from each other and listen to each other. Because it's really when you put all of the parts together that it sounds amazing," she concluded.

A Cappella Director Benji Goldsmith, who introduced the performances, said he was inspired by the idea of bringing the divisions together during a difficult year in which they've had very little interaction. “When Mr. Bloom approached me about setting up this assembly, I jumped at the chance to make it work,” Goldsmith said. “I’m thrilled that the Upper Schoolers were able to do it, and it was wonderful to see our Lower Schoolers’ faces as they watched the performance and participated in the Q&A. I hope we can do more cross-division collaboration like this in the future.”
