Fall Sports Highlights: BWL Goes the Distance

by Jessica Lichtenstein and Danielle Lambert

The return to BWL in September was marked by a resurgence of interest in sports at all levels. Our student-athletes were excited to participate in their chosen extracurricular sports, and the School revived popular traditions while creating new opportunities.

At the Middle and Upper School Field Day at Tallman State Park, students and faculty members rekindled friendly rivalries, enjoying races, football, and BWL tug-of-war competitions between grades. Field Day was followed by a school-wide effort to name our Lion Mascot—in the end, the winner was “Leo” and the classic name endures! We are celebrating Leo the Mascot all year, with a newly designed BWL Lions logo and new merchandise featuring Leo to match.

Boys Varsity Soccer and Girls Varsity Volleyball made strong showings in our league, and more students signed up for JV and Varsity teams than ever before. We honored our Class of 2023 graduating players with special “Senior Night" celebrations, and a faculty/student volleyball game is planned for later this year.

After a year long hiatus, the BWL Girls Varsity Soccer team is back! The team worked tremendously hard this season, with many new additions to the squad. The girls will continue on improving, and look forward to ending the season strong!

In Cross Country, Coaches Jason Russell (BWL '04) and newcomer Avery Sternglass, Math teacher and former Marquette’s Division One Cross Country runner, led our Varsity Cross Country team to becoming an “October surprise”. Without a single senior running on the team, BWL was able to beat almost every team in the conference. As the official runners-up in the final tournament, the group of underclassmen—or “growing empire” to quote Coach Sternglass—seems destined to become the team to beat.

BWL’s top two runners, sophomores Gianni C. ’25 and Kyle L. ’25, concluded their season with a thrilling race at the NYSAIS Cross Country State Championship.

Sophomore runners Gianni C. and Kyle L. qualified for the NYSAIS State Championship this season.

In Middle School, the Girls Volleyball team was the standout performance this fall, placing second in the league. The squad was the only team to take the undefeated Garden School to a pivotal third match.

All in all, it was an outstanding fall season for the Lions... stayed tuned for more highlights on the upcoming winter athletic season!
