Student and Community Life
Community is at the heart of life at BWL, and one of the things that makes our school so special. It grows from shared experiences, meaningful relationships, and a genuine commitment to one another. As Head of School Bill Kuhn writes in his essay, "Why Human-Scale Schools Win," our intentionally sized school allows every student to be truly known while still offering exceptional opportunities to learn, lead, and grow. Across every division, students, families, faculty, and staff come together to create a culture where everyone is valued, every voice matters, and every person has the opportunity to belong. From the classroom to the playing field, the stage to the hallways, students build lasting relationships with peers and teachers who know them well. Those connections shape every part of school life, giving students the confidence to take risks, celebrate successes, navigate challenges, and grow together.
A Community Where Everyone Belongs
Community at BWL begins with connection. Starting with our youngest students in Lower School, and extending to our seniors preparing for graduation, students are part of a school where relationships are built across grades, interests, and backgrounds. They cheer for one another, learn from one another, and discover that they are part of something bigger than themselves. Working together across all three divisions, our Lower, Middle, and Upper School Deans of Students help create a connected student experience by coordinating House activities, supporting student leadership, planning community-building events, and fostering a strong sense of belonging from Kindergarten through graduation.
One of the ways those connections take shape is through our House System. Every student is a member of one of three Houses—Blue, White, or Green—creating opportunities for friendly competition, leadership, and school spirit throughout the year. House activities bring students from different grades together, encouraging collaboration, mentorship, and lasting friendships while strengthening a shared sense of pride in the BWL community.
Our youngest students begin building cross-grade relationships through our Kindergarten and 5th Grade Buddy Program, where 5th graders serve as role models, reading partners, and mentors for our youngest learners. In the Upper School, BWL Peer Leaders help welcome new students, foster inclusion, and build a culture where every student feels seen, supported, and connected. Upper School students can also apply to become Peer Tutors, a selective program that pairs them with Lower School students for one-on-one academic support. Student Council provides another avenue for leadership, empowering students to represent their peers, strengthen school spirit, and help shape the BWL experience from the student perspective. These opportunities encourage students to lead with empathy, responsibility, and a commitment to their community.
A Community for the Whole Family
At BWL, becoming part of the school means becoming part of a community. Families are welcomed as active partners from day one, building relationships with teachers, other parents, and the broader school community that often last well beyond graduation. Open communication between parents, teachers, and school leaders helps ensure that every student is known, supported, and encouraged to thrive. From classroom celebrations and performances to athletic events, volunteer opportunities, and school traditions, there are countless ways for families to engage with school life and build lasting connections with one another.
Whether you're attending a Friday Coffee, cheering on the Lions at the homecoming game, volunteering at a community event, or simply getting to know other parents at drop-off or pickup, you'll find a welcoming community that values collaboration, involvement, and shared purpose. These relationships strengthen not only the experience of individual families but also the school community as a whole.
BWL Parents Association
The Parents Association (PA) is at the heart of family engagement at BWL. Through community-building events, volunteer opportunities, and programs that support students, faculty, staff, and families, the PA helps create meaningful connections across every division while strengthening the partnership between home and school.

Connecting Across Cultures
One of the greatest strengths of the BWL community is the opportunity to learn from people whose experiences, traditions, and perspectives may differ from our own. Every day, students build meaningful relationships across cultures and backgrounds, discovering both what makes each person unique and the values that bring us together.
Our Cultural Alliances are parent-led groups that create opportunities for families to share traditions, celebrate cultural heritage, and build connections across the BWL community. The BWL Parents Asian, Black, Hispanic, and Jewish Cultural Alliances host cultural celebrations and special events throughout the year that bring families together while enriching the experience of the entire school community. Open to all parents and guardians, the Alliances welcome anyone who wants to learn, participate, and help strengthen our community. As our community continues to grow and evolve, we welcome and encourage the formation of new Cultural Alliances that reflect the interests and experiences of our families.

- A Celebration of Family, Culture and Community, hosted by the BWL Parents Black Cultural Alliance
These experiences are supported by BWL's broader commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive community where every student feels valued and respected. We work to foster belonging, encourage thoughtful engagement across perspectives, and help students develop the empathy and cultural awareness needed to thrive in an interconnected world.
Beyond the Classroom
Learning at BWL extends well beyond the school day. Through clubs, activities, and after-school programs, students discover new interests, deepen existing passions, and build friendships that last well beyond the classroom.
In the Middle School, every student participates in at least one club each term, encouraging them to explore new ideas, develop new skills, and connect with classmates who share their interests. Club offerings evolve based on student interest and include opportunities in the arts, STEM, leadership, service, athletics, and more—from Robotics, Ethics Team, and Math Competition Club to Song Lab, Literary Magazine, Chess Club, Neighborhood Excursion Club, and Student Council. Some clubs meet during the school day, while others take place before or after school, creating opportunities for students to stay engaged in ways that fit their schedules.
In the Upper School, students can choose from dozens of student-led and faculty-sponsored clubs and organizations that reflect the diverse interests of our community. Whether they're competing in Robotics, Debate, Model UN, Robotics, or Ethics Team; giving back through community service organizations like Blood Cancer United or Glamour Gals; exploring passions through AI Club, Investing and Finance, Environmental Club, Creative Writing, or Students in Medicine; or taking on leadership roles in Student Council, Peer Tutoring, Spirit Club, Homecoming, or Prom Committee, students have countless opportunities to pursue their interests, serve others, and make a meaningful impact on campus.

Beyond clubs, our robust Afterschool Programming for Lower School students offers even more opportunities to learn, explore, and grow. Students can participate in enrichment classes, athletic programs, visual and performing arts, and specialized courses that challenge, inspire, and spark curiosity. Whether they're preparing for a performance, competing on the field, exploring a new subject, or simply spending time with friends, students find opportunities every day to learn, connect, and thrive beyond the classroom.
Giving Back Together
Service is an essential part of a BWL education. Through our Service-Learning Program, students connect classroom learning with meaningful experiences that encourage empathy, civic responsibility, and leadership while making a positive impact in the broader community.
Our dedicated Service-Learning Coordinator works with students, faculty, and community partners to plan and lead multiple service opportunities each month across all divisions. Throughout the year, students participate in initiatives such as school-wide donation drives, preparing sandwiches for the New York Common Pantry, and Friday Food Rescue, where students pack and deliver surplus lunchroom food to neighbors in need through our partnership with Grassroots Grocery. These hands-on experiences help students recognize that even small acts of service can make a meaningful difference.
Service at BWL extends beyond the school day. Families receive a monthly Service-Learning newsletter highlighting volunteer opportunities, community events, and ways to get involved together. By partnering with local organizations and encouraging participation from students and families alike, BWL fosters a culture of generosity, responsibility, and community engagement that extends far beyond our campus.
Traditions That Bring Us Together
Some of BWL's most memorable moments happen when our community comes together. From celebrations and performances to opportunities for learning and giving back, these shared experiences create lasting memories while strengthening the bonds among us.
The school year begins with opportunities for families to connect at Bill's Welcome Back Breakfast and Back-to-School Cocktail Parties, setting the stage for a year of partnership and community. Throughout the year, Friday Coffee in the Commons gatherings, BWL Speaker Series events, Lower School Grandparents and Special Friends Visiting Day, and Alumni Reunions bring parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, alumni, and friends of the school together to connect, learn, and strengthen relationships. Community celebrations like our Annual Spring Benefit, Spring Fair, K–12 Field Day, and LIONSKATE: BWL Family Skating Party create lasting memories and strengthen the sense of connection and Lion Pride that define the BWL community.
BWL is also home to traditions that celebrate the milestones of the school year. Homecoming brings students together for a spirited pep rally before families and alumni gather to cheer on the Lions at the Homecoming game. At the Holiday Arts Festival, students showcase their talents before the entire community. Arch Day honors important milestones for our Lower and Middle School students, and Graduation celebrates the accomplishments of the senior class as they join our alumni community.
