Spring 2022 Sports Highlights

Boys & Girls Varsity Track & Field

The 2022 BWL Track season was a huge success. There were strong showings and a few top 3 finishes throughout the entire season, despite many runners participating in track for the first time. However, what was most impressive was how the BWL Lions rose to the occasion during the championship meet, with the boys team taking home 2nd place overall.

Russell Fisher won a silver medal in the 100m event and bronze medal in the 200m event, qualifying for the NYSAIS state championship in the process. Andrew Kaplan and Hawke Blume won gold and bronze medals respectively in the shotput event. Eve Craven won a bronze medal in the 400m event for our girl's team, and our boys relay teams won a silver and bronze medal in the 4x100 and 4x400 events. With the exception of 12th grader Eve Craven, our entire team is eligible to return next season. With added experience and maturation, the future is bright for our BWL Track team.

Girls Varsity Tennis

Girls Tennis enjoyed a phenomenal season this Spring. Boasting depth up and down the lineup, they quickly established themselves as a dominant force in the league, handily defeating Dwight’s A team, an experienced bunch, five to nothing in their very first match. Throughout April they only heated up, rattling off another four statement victories before ultimately squaring off with their only fellow undefeated squad in FASNY for the league title. Despite a tremendous and committed team effort, the girls narrowly fell to French American three to two in a match that lay undecided until the very last point. Nonetheless, this team accomplished a great deal this season and will certainly compete for a banner again next year.

Perhaps more important than their final record however was the collective demeanor exhibited by these girls throughout. Both in match play and practice, this group demonstrated unflagging sportsmanship and a sincere love for the game each and every time they stepped onto the court. This is a good sports team comprised of even better individuals. It was an absolute pleasure to coach them and I have no doubt they will only improve come next Spring.

Boys Varsity Baseball

This season there was a fantastic 1,2 pitching combo! Junior, Hugo Maggio, who had a 21 strikeout game alongside 50+ total strikeouts throughout the season. As well as Freshman, Harrison Milowitz who had a fantastic start to the season had an 11 strikeout game and got a win on April 11th vs Churchill.

On April 11th as well, Senior Dylan Blackman had 3 hits and 1 homerun alongside 2 RBIs which helped the offense back up Harrison to win the game. It was Birch's only home run on the season.
