Tuition and Financial Aid

Investing in a BWL Education

At the Birch Wathen Lenox School, we believe that an exceptional education is one of the most meaningful investments a family can make. We're deeply committed to helping families from a range of economic backgrounds access that opportunity.

Rooted in a tradition of academic excellence and intellectual freedom, BWL offers a forward-thinking, classical education that prepares students to navigate—and shape—the world around them. We know families come to us seeking not just a school, but a community: one that challenges, supports, and inspires their children to become thoughtful, engaged, and compassionate citizens.

We also understand the realities of the independent school landscape in New York City. That’s why we offer a robust need-based financial aid program, ensuring that mission-aligned families can join and remain in our community regardless of financial circumstance.

While we are continually inspired by the academic achievements and individual talents of our students—whether in character, athletics, music, or beyond—BWL does not offer merit-based scholarships. Our financial aid program is intentionally mission-driven and need-based, grounded in our commitment to creating an inclusive and accessible community for all.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Financial Aid is typically focused on students enrolling in Kindergarten, 6th Grade, or the Upper School. Very limited financial aid is available in other grades.

Our Commitment to Access

BWL’s financial aid program is guided by our belief in equity, transparency, and shared investment. Awards are based solely on demonstrated financial need and determined through a confidential, holistic review process.

Each year, we award more than $7 million in financial aid, spanning Kindergarten through 12th grade. This support helps us foster a community that reflects the full diversity of New York City—not just demographically, but in ambition, ideas, and perspectives.

Applying for Financial Aid

BWL partners with Clarity, a secure and streamlined platform that simplifies the application process. The Clarity application provides a clear and comprehensive view of each family's financial picture, allowing us to make fair and consistent award decisions.

We encourage any family who may qualify to apply. Our financial aid team is here to guide you through each step, with respect for your time and circumstances.
