About Our Neighborhood
The Birch Wathen Lenox School is proud to call the Upper East Side home.Nestled on East 77th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, our campus is part of one of New York City’s most vibrant and family-friendly neighborhoods. With its tree-lined streets, historic brownstones, and a lively mix of local shops and cafés, the area offers both the energy of the city and the comfort of a close-knit community.
Our neighborhood is home to some of the finest cultural and research institutions in Manhattan.
Just steps away from our doors, students and families can enjoy all that the neighborhood has to offer. Central Park and John Jay Park provide green spaces for play, discovery, and reflection.
The world-class cultural institutions of Museum Mile—including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, and the Neue Galerie—offer endless opportunities for inspiration and learning.
The neighborhood’s many libraries and cultural centers open even more doors to exploration. Local cafés, bookstores, and family-run restaurants add warmth and character, making it easy to find a favorite spot to gather after school or on the weekends.
With a lively mix of the city’s energy and the charm of a residential community, the Upper East Side offers an inviting atmosphere where our school community feels truly at home.

Rooted in History, Alive with Possibility
Above all, the Upper East Side embodies the same values that guide Birch Wathen Lenox: tradition, curiosity, and connection. It's a place where history and innovation meet, where neighbors look out for one another, and where our students can learn and grow surrounded by the best of New York City.
In our vibrant corner of Manhattan, the rhythm of the city becomes a source of inspiration, inviting our students to dream boldly, grow with purpose, and discover a world of possibilities.

For our students, the Upper East Side is an extension of the classroom.
A walk through the neighborhood might mean visiting a local gallery, exploring the history of the area’s architecture, or admiring elaborate Halloween decorations and soaking in holiday cheer—all part of the adventures our Lower School students experience through the Lions Roam NY program.
The neighborhood encourages independence and curiosity, giving students the chance to navigate the city with confidence and ease. At the same time, its safe, welcoming character allows families to feel at home, knowing their children are learning and growing in a supportive environment.

Connected to Every Corner of the City...and Beyond
The accessibility of the subway and bus lines also makes our campus easy to reach from all parts of the city, welcoming families from near and far. Whether arriving from downtown, uptown, or across the river, families find the commute both convenient and reliable, reinforcing our school’s connection to the wider New York community.
