Our Lower School

Two smiling young girls with their arms around each other sit in front of a wooden bench and a tree.

In the Lower School, strong foundations are built deliberately. Students develop as readers, writers, mathematicians, speakers, listeners, artists, problem-solvers, and classmates. Our teachers know that young children learn best when instruction is clear, active, joyful, and responsive to who they are.

BWL’s Lower School combines academic seriousness with close attention to each child’s growth. Teachers notice how students approach new challenges, where they need support, and when they are ready for more. That daily knowledge allows children to build confidence without disappearing into a larger system.

Program Overview

At the heart of our Lower School program is a thoughtfully designed curriculum that sparks curiosity, inspires higher-order thinking, and builds a lifelong love of learning. With a rigorous foundation in math and language arts, students gain the essential skills and confidence needed to excel across all areas of study. Equally important, we emphasize effective communication and constructive dialogue, empowering students to engage with diverse perspectives and contribute to a vibrant, inclusive community. Social and emotional growth is woven into every experience, fostering empathy, respect, and resilience. By nurturing strong connections among students, faculty, and families, we create a supportive network where every child feels a deep sense of belonging, well-being, and purpose.

Early Foundations for Lifelong Learning

In the Lower School, learning is active, engaging, and designed to spark curiosity at every step. Each day brings opportunities to practice essential skills, take on new challenges, and build confidence as students grow in independence and responsibility.

Building Confidence in Language Arts
From Kindergarten onward, students are immersed in meaningful language experiences that foster a love of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Daily practice in literacy builds fluency and comprehension, while purposeful writing assignments strengthen clarity and creativity of expression. Discussions, presentations, and storytelling all contribute to strong communication skills and the confidence to share ideas with others.

Developing Strong Mathematical Thinkers
In Mathematics, students move from concrete exploration to abstract reasoning, guided by a program that emphasizes problem-solving, logical thinking, and real-world application. Beginning with number sense and basic operations, children progress to more complex concepts such as fractions, geometry, and multi-step problem-solving. Hands-on activities, games, and collaborative challenges help students see math as both engaging and meaningful, equipping them with skills they will use for life.

A Balanced and Enriched Education
Core academics are complemented by a wide range of courses and experiences designed to encourage expression, innovation, and whole-child wellness. Lower School students benefit from instruction in STEAM, technology and design, library, physical education, music, world language, and the visual and performing arts. This balanced approach allows children to explore diverse interests, discover new passions, and develop as well-rounded learners. Along the way, they gain confidence not only in the classroom, but also on the stage, in the studio, and on the playing field. These experiences nurture creativity, resilience, and joy, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to shine.

Program Highlights

Beyond the everyday learning experiences at BWL, a variety of unique programs enrich your child's educational journey. Here’s a glimpse of what makes a BWL education truly special.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

The hands-on approach of experiential learning is integrated into daily activities to foster growth and curiosity. Lower students will work with our Hydroponic and Aquaponic Farms, learning sustainable agriculture, developing a sense of environmental stewardship, and fostering a connection with nature, helping to shape their understanding and appreciation of the world around them.

LIONS ROAM NEW YORK

By taking learning beyond textbooks and traditional classroom walls, Lions Roam NY cultivates curiosity and a sense of belonging within the vibrant urban environment of New York City.

TECH, DESIGN, & STEAM

Whether through high-tech, low-tech, or even no-tech hands-on projects, Lower School students develop a versatile and resilient skill set that prepares them to navigate and shape the future with confidence.

"Our son has been nurtured and loved by the teachers and has found a strong circle of friends with the other students at BWL. The curriculum is strong and creative, and we love all the opportunities for exciting learning experiences the school provides. But most of all, we really love this community."

Why Choose K–12th Grade

A lion mascot with arms raised in victory stands in the foreground surrounded by cheering children, while a blurred background shows more onlookers and a doorway.

Our K–12 experience builds a strong, tight-knit community by bringing together students, families, faculty, and staff over many years. Teachers get to know students and their needs before they arrive in their classrooms, helping them prepare students for success at the next level.

This long-term connection fosters a sense of belonging and stability as everyone becomes familiar with our community’s values, traditions, and goals. This also provides a continuous educational experience, where each grade builds on the previous grade in an intentional yet natural progression that helps students avoid gaps in learning, achieving a deeper understanding of concepts, and better academic outcomes.

Students benefit from forming lasting friendships, cross-divisional connections, and supportive relationships with teachers who understand their growth and needs over time.

Families also enjoy a unified experience, participating in school events and activities and developing a deeper engagement with the school’s community. This ongoing relationship creates a supportive network that enriches both academic and social experiences for everyone involved.
