Curiosity, Courage, and Conversation: The 2025 Constructive Dialogue Summit

BWL’s inaugural Constructive Dialogue Summit on April 7 was a huge success! The evening, designed to deepen the school’s commitment to open, respectful, and thoughtful conversation, marked a significant step forward in our broader initiative to cultivate environments where different viewpoints can be shared and explored with intellectual honesty and empathy.

The Summit brought together experts, educators, students, thought leaders, and community members for an evening dedicated to listening, learning, and leading, to examine what constructive dialogue looks like in practice. Through keynote speeches, breakout discussions, and panel conversations, participants engaged with some of today’s most pressing questions around free expression, identity, civic responsibility, and the role of constructive dialogue in technology and education.

One of the highlights of the evening was the keynote address by Nadine Strossen, former president of the ACLU and a leading voice in the field of civil liberties, in conversation with a panel of BWL students. They covered topics including current free speech controversies, the role of free speech in social media, and the First Amendment protections and their impact on minors in public schools. Strossen’s insights challenged attendees to think critically about the balance between protecting individual rights and fostering inclusive communities. Her dialogue with students was both intellectually rigorous and refreshingly candid, reflecting the very values the Summit aims to promote: curiosity, courage, and mutual respect.

Breakout sessions allowed attendees to dive deeper into specific themes, including navigating ideological diversity in the classroom, addressing polarization in online spaces, and strategies for facilitating difficult conversations. Facilitated by faculty members and guest experts, these smaller group discussions provided participants with practical tools and frameworks to use in their own circles and communities.

The Constructive Dialogue Summit was a call to action and a challenge to show up for these important conversations. That spirit will continue to guide BWL’s ongoing efforts to cultivate thoughtful, engaged, and empathetic citizens in an increasingly complex world.
